Second chance at life: Rebooting 80s cartoon favorites


What was once old is new again. Do you remember 1980s cartoons? Some of the coolest cartoons came out in the 1980s. Some were educational; many were not. Some had giant adventures and battles of good versus evil. These cartoons were good old fashion fun. According to Comic Books Galaxy, there are numerous cartoons being recreated and released in 2017, 2018, or 2019. These cartoons include Duck Tales, The Magic School Bus, Thunder Cats, Dungeons and Dragons, PowerPuff Girls, and Inspector Gadget.

One cartoon, Voltron, has been remade by Netflix in 2016. The full name of the cartoon is Voltron: Legendary Defender. According to ‘Voltron’: 5 Things to know about the Netflix Reboot, the story follows 5 Earth teenagers: Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Shiro. These teenagers become involved in an intergalactic battle against King Zarkon; the evil alien. They are responsible for defending Earth and other planets. Like the original cartoon, each teenager will have a mechanical tiger. When combined they make a life like a machine known as Voltron.

The newest release is Duck Tales. The first episode was a one hour special and aired on Aug. 12, 2017. Currently, it can be viewed on YouTube. Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, and Bobby Moynihan voice the show regulars Huey, Dewie, and Louie. These characters have more individualized personalities compared to their 1980s counterparts. David Tennant-also-known-as the 10th Doctor in the new version of Doctor Who– voices Scrooge McDuck who is nicer than his character in the 1980s. In the first episode, Huey, Dewie, and Louie are living with their uncle Donald Duck. Scrooge agrees to Babysit the children so that Donald could go to a job interview. The kids infer that Scrooge is a has been causing Scrooge to try to recapture his youth. Scrooged and the kids go on an underwater adventure to the lost city of Atlantis. Soon a competition ensues between them and Scrooge’s arch nemesis who is holding Donald hostage. In the end, Scrooge ends up with the Jewel of Atlantis. Rumor has it that Darkwing Duck is going to have a guest appearance on the show.
Two 1980s cartoon are already remade with five more coming soon. Which cartoon are you most looking forward to seeing?
