Geek events in Denver for August 2017

Summer is flying by and August is almost upon us. Outside the Denver area temperatures are soaring, while inside geeks can soak up some cool and refreshing fun. Two popular conventions kick off and close out the month, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science consistently entertains, and some epic music rounds out the month.

Myths and Legends Convention is special. Anyone who has attended this shiny shindig can tell you it is all about the favorites. It focuses on what so many sci-fi fans love the most: ‘Firefly’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Supernatural’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and more. Fans have their calendar marked for this popular event Aug 4-6, 2017 at the Ramada Plaza Denver North. The guests of honor are New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline Cary, the adorable and talented singer-songwriter Marian Call, and artists Jim Humble.

Tickets are still available. Adult weekend pass: $35. Child (ages 7-12) $17.50.

Watch the amazing film “Arrival” and geek out at the with space scientist Ka Chun Yu, PhD, and Associate Professor of English & Linguistics, Andrew Pantos, PhD. Presented by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Film Society, viewers will be treated to enjoy the movie and then discuss it with experts in the field. For six years now the Sci-Fi Film Series has been delighting Denver audiences, and every event brings new viewers.

There will be a cash bar for added fun. $12 Museum or Denver Film Society member, $15 nonmember, $8 students. Tickets available through the Denver Film Society.

Steampunk on a Saturday night is always a good idea. The Hard Rock Cafe on 16th Street in Denver hosts Celtica for an evening of bagpipes and fantasy. Known across the verse for their Gothic, Steampunk, and metal style, the evening will be filled with music and a Victorian age romance. Grab those tickets online for just $15.00

Only one hour south of Denver, the Colorado Springs Comic Con returns for his second year. This year fans will geek out over the 90,000 square feet of happiness in the newly named Altered Reality Event Center Aug. 25-27, 2017. This pop culture convention can boast some big names this year with guests like Sean Maher, Karen Gillan, Billy Dee Williams, Timothy Zahn, and some well-known “Power Rangers.” Zombies won’t stand a chance with “The Walking Dead” guests Michael Rooker, Josh McDermitt, Scott Wilson, Jon Bernthal, Ross Marquand, Tom Payne, and more. The list is pretty darn stunning.
